Description

The Research Scientist I in the Global Deformation Center of Innovation lab will be the principal investigator, or function as a project team member.  The expected contribution will be to plan and execute complex, research projects that result in the development of new product principles, new technology, or new understanding of Quaker Houghton’s core technology based upon standards and goals set forth by Research Management. The Research Scientist I will be an expert in Deformation applications and shall be responsible for the collection of knowledge, as well as coaching or directing the work of chemists and technicians. The Research Scientist I is expected to provide technical leadership within the global Deformation collaboration Charters between R&D, Commercial Strategy and Product Application groups as well as across Quaker Houghton’s global R&D efforts.  They are expected to be actively involved in the regionally relevant professional society(ies) of their technical field.

Job Responsibilities/Activities

  • Lead and execute autonomously a broad variety of experimental activities to further the knowledge and state of the art of technologies, leading to the successful completion of research projects.
  • Advance practical and theoretical knowledge in at least one of Quaker Houghton’s core technologies critical to the execution of the business.  Refine knowledge and keep up to date on developments in multiple fields of specialty.  Serve as a technical expert and consultant in support of the R&D community.
  • Develop and maintain a detailed knowledge of customer processes in order to enable the continued development of value-added technology.
  • Develop an in-depth knowledge of the performance attributes of competitive products and, as necessary, lead programs to uncover the key attributes that contribute to competitors state of the art technology in order to fill technology gaps or develop advantaged technology.
  • When relevant, investigate the synthesis or utilization of new chemical compounds that lead to the enhancement of process performance of Quaker Houghton products.  An in-depth knowledge of chemical structure, functionality and modes of physical and chemical performance would be applied to these activities.
  • When relevant, develop new and innovative tests that enhance the ability to analyze the performance, physical or chemical properties of Quaker Houghton products, customer products or raw materials.  Evaluate and recommend purchasing of new equipment.  Ensure and report on the statistical significance of all data. 
  • Manage the data collection, knowledge capture and communication for research projects.  Report results in a clear and concise manner to enhance technical exchange.  Provide legal and archival documentation for patent applications.
  • Develop and deliver education programs and seminars for the advancement of the knowledge of Quaker Houghton employees and customers.  Prepare and deliver seminars and technical papers for presentation to customers, trade organizations and professional journals to enhance the technical image of the organization.
  • Perform collaborative research with a variety of customer, vendor and academic technology partners
  • Maintain equipment glassware and workspace in order to keep them clean and well-functioning.  Properly dispose of all laboratory waste. Participate in ensuring good management of laboratory equipment and storage spaces for chemicals and raw materials. Comply with housekeeping rules.
  • Ensure that all equipment and machines in your area of control are managed with regards to safety, maintenance, calibration, and availability.

Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality responsibilities:

  • Comply with the applicable regulations and standards regarding quality, safety, environmental as well as the occupational health standards in order to minimize risks in these areas and to create opportunities and chances for improvement.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  1. Work in a laboratory and administrative office setting, w/ some travel as required.
  2. Ensure a safety mindset throughout designated area of responsibility.


Requirements

Qualifications, Skills, Competencies:

  • A bachelor’s degree in one of these core technology fields:  Chemistry, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Microbiology, Tribology, Colloids, or Corrosion Engineering
  • Master’s or PhD highly preferred. 
  • 15+ years related scientific experience required including in formulation of Metalworking or Deformation lubricant products core areas. 
  • Must be an expert in at least one core technology area and knowledgeable in key customer processes. 
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience (minimum bachelor’s degree) will be considered. 

Language Ability:

  • A good command of the English language is mandatory.  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret advanced scientific and technical journals and financial reports.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.

Computer Skills:

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software; Spreadsheet software; Internet software and Database software.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • There are no managerial responsibilities for this position but is responsible for coaching or directing the work of chemists and technicians in all areas of responsibility on assigned research projects and for educating others in the technical organization in their area of expertise.

Competencies:

  • Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, to work on different projects at the same time, and to think analytically.  In addition, must have good prioritization and communication skills (oral and writing).  Must be involved, careful, precise, team player, flexible, result/customer oriented and takes initiative. Ability to write presentations, speeches and articles for publication that conforms to prescribed style and format. Must be able to read and understand complex technical publications. In the addition to the above, an individual must have demonstrated the ability to perform the functions of this position.

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to carefully, and precisely manipulate samples, apparatus, and sensitive instruments.  The employee is frequently required to stand and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to walk sit and talk or hear.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, or no more than local or country regulations allow.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
